Yashasvi Jaiswal Responds to Asitha Fernando Clash: ‘Don’t Make Your Judgment’

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka was followed by an ugly confrontation with pacer Asitha Fernando, with the India opener now facing scrutiny over whether he went too far.

Jaiswal had smashed three consecutive boundaries off Fernando before the Sri Lankan pacer had the last laugh, dismissing him for 45 with the final delivery of the over. As Jaiswal walked back towards the pavilion, Fernando appeared to give him a send-off.

Jaiswal then turned around and walked back towards the bowler. The two exchanged words before the confrontation escalated, with the pair appearing to clash heads and push each other. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva and other players intervened to separate them.

The incident quickly became one of the talking points from an otherwise dominant day for India, who finished on 300/5 after Devdutt Padikkal’s second successive Test century.

What happened between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Fernando?

The flashpoint came in the 17th over of India’s innings.

Jaiswal had taken Fernando for three boundaries in succession before the fast bowler responded with a shorter delivery. Jaiswal got an inside edge onto his stumps and was dismissed.

As Fernando celebrated, Jaiswal initially continued towards the dressing room before turning back. The two players then squared up, with the exchange becoming physical before teammates stepped in.

Exactly what was said between the two remains unclear.

That distinction has become important in the aftermath, with Jaiswal himself responding to criticism on social media.

” If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment. If anyone cross the line we need to let them know this. India will fight and reply,” Jaiswal wrote.

Harsha Bhogle weighs in

The incident has also prompted debate among former players and commentators, with Harsha Bhogle questioning whether Jaiswal crossed the line during the confrontation.

Bhogle’s comments have added another layer to the discussion, with the focus shifting from the usual Test-match verbal exchanges to whether the physical nature of the confrontation warranted disciplinary action.

Jaiswal’s response suggested that there was more to the exchange than what was visible on the broadcast.

What did Sri Lanka say?

Sri Lanka’s fast-bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk did not speculate on what happened between the two players and instead left the matter to match referee Andy Pycroft.

“The verbals are probably an overflow of emotion. I’ll leave that to the match referee to deal with,” van Niekerk said.

His comments effectively left the question of possible punishment in the hands of the match officials.

Could Jaiswal face ICC action?

The incident could fall under the ICC Code of Conduct provisions relating to physical contact and personal abuse during an international match.

Clause 2.12 covers inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or another person during an international match, while Clause 2.13 relates to personal abuse.

Based on the incident as described, any offence is likely to fall within Level 1 or Level 2 of the code. Possible penalties at those levels range from an official warning to a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee.

Neither Jaiswal nor Fernando has a previous recorded offence, meaning a suspension would appear unlikely unless the match referee determines that the incident was more serious than it initially appeared.

India coach admits Jaiswal should have kept his distance

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak acknowledged that Jaiswal should not have approached Fernando so closely, while also suggesting that something may have been said by the Sri Lankan pacer.

“I think the bowler must have made some comment, and it was probably said in the heat of the moment. Obviously, I don’t think Jaiswal should have gone that close, but these things happen in the heat of the moment,” Kotak said.

That perhaps captures the central question surrounding the incident.

Competitive cricket has always involved verbal exchanges, send-offs and attempts to unsettle opponents. But once an argument becomes physical, the boundaries are different.

Jaiswal’s argument is that the full context of the exchange matters. The match officials, however, will have to decide whether the confrontation crossed the line.

For now, the question remains: did Jaiswal cross it, or was his reaction simply the result of a heated Test-match exchange?
