Mohun Bagan Prevail over Jamshedpur in Marathon Shootout to Reach Durand Cup Semi-Finals

Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured their place in the semi-finals of the 135th Durand Cup after overcoming Jamshedpur FC 9-8 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday.

The quarter-final went all the way to a dramatic sudden-death shootout, with the first 16 penalties converted by both teams. The decisive moment finally arrived when Jamshedpur’s Lawmsangzuala saw his attempt saved by Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. Tekcham Abhishek Singh then held his nerve to convert the next penalty and send the Mariners through.

Mohun Bagan had made a flying start to the contest, taking the lead in only the second minute. Sahal Abdul Samad capitalised on a loose ball inside the Jamshedpur half, drove into the penalty area and calmly placed his shot into the bottom-right corner.

The early goal gave the hosts confidence, but Jamshedpur gradually grew into the game and began enjoying more possession. They threatened through Aman CK, who forced Kaith into a sharp save from a difficult angle, while Pratik Chowdhary also went close from a set-piece situation.

Mohun Bagan had opportunities to double their advantage, with Dejan Drazic particularly unfortunate not to find the target after being presented with two promising chances. However, Jamshedpur remained competitive and eventually found their reward just before half-time.

Rashithoi Meetei’s long-range effort was only parried by Kaith, allowing Devendra Murgaonkar to react quickest and finish from close range to restore parity. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and then a marathon penalty shootout saw the Mariners prevail 9-8 to book their place in the semis.

Vishal Kaith saved the shot from Mama to give MBSG the advantage, and then Abhimeitei converted his spot kick to give them the crucial win.

Mohun Bagan will now play the semi-final clash on August 20 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong against either Shillong Lajong FC or NorthEast United FC.
