In women’s singles, debutant Unnati Hooda overcame a difficult start against Myanmar’s Thet Htar Thuzar. She recovered from a 13-16 deficit in the opening game to win 22-20, 21-16. Hooda will next face 13th seed Michelle Li of Canada, who defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian 22-20, 21-12.

Lakshya Sen, the 14th seed and 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, also progressed after overcoming Austria’s Collins Filimon 16-21, 21-8, 21-4.

Filimon exploited Sen’s early struggles from the difficult side of the court and used his powerful smashes to take the first game. Sen will meet USA’s Garret Tan in the second round.
