Atlanta Dream Win Over Fever Boosts Playoff Readiness, Smesko Says

Atlanta Dream strengthened their Eastern Conference push with a 108-101 road win over Indiana Fever, in a game that carried strong playoff energy. The result moved Atlanta to 10-4, just behind New York Liberty, while ending Indiana’s four-game winning streak.

The meeting at Gainbridge Fieldhouse also served as payback, as Indiana had beaten Atlanta heavily two weeks earlier. This time, Atlanta’s starters controlled long stretches, then answered a late Fever surge to reclaim momentum in the closing minutes.

Every Atlanta starter scored at least 16 points in the high-scoring contest. Angel Reese led the Dream with 21 points, followed by Jordin Canada with 18. Naz Hillmon and Allisha Gray added 17 each, while Rhyne Howard finished with 16 points.

Indiana’s offence matched that output for most of the night. Caitlin Clark scored 26 points, the same total as Kelsey Mitchell, while Aliyah Boston contributed 23. Despite reaching triple figures, it became Indiana’s third defeat this season when scoring at least 100 points, the highest such mark in the league.

Coach Karl Smesko viewed the contest as vital preparation for the WNBA’s decisive stages. “The more you play in playoff intensity games that have this type of edge where both teams are playing at that level… the more comfortable you’ll be in those situations,” Smesko said. “So, it’s a great road win against a really good team.”

The Dream still had to survive a major late push. Indiana overturned a 13-point deficit with just over five minutes left, helped by a loud home crowd, before Atlanta responded again and closed out the final possessions with greater composure.

Reese highlighted the team’s focus during Indiana’s comeback spell and stressed the importance of staying composed under pressure. Reese said: “We talked a little bit at halftime about not getting too comfortable. I think we stayed together and continued to push. We knew they were going to go on a run, especially with their crowd. When their crowd gets into it, I think they feel that energy, and they did a great job with that.”

The teams meet again at State Farm Arena on Saturday, giving the Fever a swift opportunity to respond. Atlanta enters that game with confidence from the balanced scoring display and late-game execution, while Indiana will look to adjust defensively after another high-scoring loss.
