According to ESPN Brasil, discussions between the CBF and Indian stakeholders have progressed significantly, with only the final details remaining before an agreement is signed. If finalised, the match would be played in Kolkata in early October.

Brazil eye India stop after Australia friendlies

Brazil have already confirmed two international friendlies against Australia during the September-October FIFA window.

The fixtures are scheduled for:

  • September 25 – vs Australia (Townsville)
  • September 29 – vs Australia (Brisbane)

The CBF is now looking to add a third match in early October, with India emerging as the frontrunner to host the fixture.

While Brazil’s opponent has not yet been confirmed, the report states that negotiations have advanced only with India despite interest from Bangladesh, Singapore and Qatar.

Why does Brazil want to play in India?

The report claims discussions began during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 after Brazil officials were impressed by the overwhelming support from Indian fans throughout the tournament.

Images and videos of thousands of supporters wearing Brazil jerseys, particularly from Kolkata, gained traction on social media during the World Cup, reportedly encouraging the CBF to explore the possibility of bringing the Selecao to India.

The proposed fixture also aligns with FIFA’s expanded international calendar, which allows national teams to play up to four matches during the extended international window.

Why Kolkata?

Kolkata has long been regarded as India’s football capital and shares a unique relationship with Brazilian football.

The city famously hosted Pelé and New York Cosmos for an exhibition match against Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens in 1977, one of the most iconic moments in Indian football history.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kolkata once again embraced Brazil, with murals of Neymar and Vinícius Júnior adorning streets across the city and thousands of fans turning out in Brazil colours throughout the tournament.

If the proposed friendly goes ahead, it would mark another landmark moment in the city’s rich footballing history.

Brazil looking beyond the World Cup

The proposed India visit comes after a disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign for Brazil.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Norway despite Vinícius Júnior enjoying an outstanding tournament, scoring four goals and registering one assist.

The CBF is also reportedly planning to schedule more home friendlies in 2027, particularly in Brazilian cities that do not regularly host the national team.

While the agreement has not yet been finalised, reports suggest negotiations are at an advanced stage, with Kolkata currently the preferred destination should Brazil’s proposed October friendly in India receive the green light.
