France eased into the World Cup knockout phase with a 4-1 win over Norway, powered by an early Ousmane Dembele hat-trick at Boston Stadium. The result secured first place in Group I, while a heavily rotated Norway side finished second and now faces Ivory Coast in Dallas on June 30.
Dembele struck three times by the 32nd minute, recording the second-earliest World Cup hat-trick in history. Thelo Aasgaard briefly gave Norway hope in a furious first half, but Desire Doue added a stoppage-time header to complete the scoring after Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty for Norway.

With this win, France became group winners and will meet one of the third-placed teams in East Rutherford, New Jersey, also on June 30. Norway, despite resting 10 regular starters including Erling Haaland, still claimed second in Group I and heads to what could be a standout round-of-32 clash with Ivory Coast.
Norway’s sweeping rotation meant Haaland stayed on the bench all match, underlining the plan to protect key players. The decision also highlighted Norway’s dependence on Haaland, as the national team is winless in six competitive fixtures without Haaland starting, recording three draws and three defeats in that stretch.
The match unfolded without head coach Didier Deschamps on the France touchline, after the death of Deschamps’ mother. Even so, France started at high speed, generating seven shots on target inside the opening 20 minutes, the most recorded by any team in that time span at a World Cup since data collection began in 1966.
Kylian Mbappe almost opened the scoring inside 30 seconds. After Dembele pounced on a loose pass from Leo Ostigard, Mbappe burst through but hit the crossbar from a tight angle. The woodwork denied Mbappe again later, yet the forward still shaped the game through movement, passing and constant threat from the left channel.
Dembele’s first goal arrived in the seventh minute from that early French pressure. Mbappe slipped a throughball behind Norway’s defence, Dembele cut inside from the right, then lashed a fierce right-footed shot high past the unsighted Egil Selvik. Norway soon created a major chance, but Strand Larsen fired over from eight yards with the goal in sight.
France punished that wastefulness after 20 minutes, again through the same pair. Mbappe picked out Dembele in a similar area, and Dembele again drifted inside. This time Dembele used the left foot, sending a powerful, curling strike from around 20 yards into the far corner, putting France 2-0 ahead and fully in control.
Norway responded instantly from the restart, catching France’s defence off guard. Andreas Schjelderup threaded a pass into Aasgaard, who drove beyond Dayot Upamecano. Aasgaard then drilled a low shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards, leaving Mike Maignan rooted, and briefly cutting the deficit to 2-1 as Norwegian supporters roared back.
Dembele completed the hat-trick before half-time, restoring France’s two-goal cushion. Aurelien Tchouameni found Dembele in the penalty area, and Dembele delayed the shot cleverly, shifting the ball while facing several defenders. Dembele eventually guided another left-footed effort into the bottom corner, securing a 3-1 lead by the 32nd minute and underlining total attacking dominance.
Selvik kept Norway in contention late in the half, blocking efforts from Doue and Manu Kone. After the restart, Norway earned a lifeline when Theo Hernandez tripped Oscar Bobb inside the area. Strand Larsen took responsibility from the spot, but Maignan guessed correctly to the left and saved comfortably, a key moment in the contest.
France vs Norway World Cup stars Dembele and Mbappe shine
Mbappe continued chasing a goal, striking narrowly wide from outside the box with a trademark driven attempt. Apart from Maignan’s strong save from Bobb late on, France controlled the second half. The coaching staff then substituted Dembele and Michael Olise before the second hydration break, avoiding unnecessary risk with both attackers and managing minutes efficiently.
Doue added a late fourth in the fourth minute of added time. Substitute Bradley Barcola delivered a precise cross from the left, which Doue met with a firm header. That finish “put the icing on the cake” for France on a night when the forwards repeatedly exposed Norway’s experimental back line and confirmed first place in the group.
The partnership between Dembele and Mbappe was decisive, especially against Norway’s much-changed defence. Two of Dembele’s goals came from Mbappe assists, and both players now sit on four goals at this tournament. France thus became the first World Cup side since Poland in 1974 to see two players score at least four times in a single group stage.
Dembele’s treble ranks behind only Austria’s Erich Probst, who hit a 24-minute hat-trick against Czechoslovakia in 1954 for earliest World Cup hat-tricks. Dembele has now scored in successive World Cup matches after failing to find the net in a run of 12 previous appearances, marking a striking shift in end product for the winger.
Mbappe’s wider World Cup numbers are also significant. Mbappe now has 20 goal involvements at World Cups since debuting in 2018, with 16 goals and four assists. That total is higher than any other player in that period, placing Mbappe two clear of Lionel Messi, who has 13 goals and five assists over the same timeframe.
At this edition, Mbappe has already been involved in six goals, with four goals and two assists. That figure is the highest by any player in a World Cup group stage since Miroslav Klose also produced six contributions in 2002, recording five goals and one assist. Mbappe’s influence extends well beyond scoring alone, shaping defensive plans every match.
The team’s broader form further supports France’s ambitions. This is just the second World Cup in which France have won all three group games. The previous instance came in 1998, when France went on to lift the trophy. The current run, combined with clinical attacking performances, places France among the strongest contenders as the knockouts approach.
Norway’s selection choices also entered the record books. Norway became only the fourth World Cup side to change at least 10 starters within a single tournament. Although the 4-1 defeat stung, the decision should mean Norway’s main players, including Haaland, are physically fresh for the round-of-32 tie, which appears set to be a high-profile meeting with Ivory Coast.

France leave Boston with maximum points from Group I, an in-form frontline and historical scoring markers for both Dembele and Mbappe. Norway depart with several concerns but also a rested core group, making the upcoming meeting with Ivory Coast in Dallas a major test of whether that rotation policy will ultimately prove worthwhile.
