Dinesh Karthik Reveals Why India Chose to Bat First Against England, Points to ‘Irish Hangover’ Behind The Decision

India’s call to bat first against England in the opening T20I at Chester-le-Street was shaped as much by recent scars as by conditions, according to Dinesh Karthik. With cloud cover and rain threatening the game, Shreyas Iyer’s decision at the toss raised eyebrows because chasing is often preferred in shortened or weather-hit matches.

Karthik, speaking to Cricbuzz, said India appeared influenced by the 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland, where they had chosen to bowl first in both games but failed to complete their chases. India lost those matches by 34 runs and one run, leaving a clear tactical lesson before the England series.

Dinesh Karthik Points To Ireland Setback

“India, choosing to bat, was a good decision, even though, obviously, there was a bit of weather around the corner constantly… The general tendency is to chase down totals,” former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik said, quoted Cricbuzz while analysing the decision.

He added that the memory of the Irish defeats may have stayed with the Indian camp. “It was a bit of an awkward evening here because rain was always looming around the corner, but I do think the Ireland hangover was there a bit. So, India decided, ‘let’s not chase and bat first,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

India’s batting-first plan worked well before the weather intervened. They reached 189/7 in their 20 overs, a total that gave their bowlers something substantial to defend. However, rain intensified towards the end of the innings and England never got a proper chase underway.

The umpires eventually abandoned the match with limited time left before the cut-off for a five-over contest. For India, it meant a strong batting effort went unrewarded, but the approach still offered clues about how the team may handle pressure situations in the rest of the series.

Shreyas Iyer Leads From The Front

Iyer was central to India’s total, making 68 off 47 balls with six fours and a six. Abhishek Sharma gave India early momentum with 59, while Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 42 off 21 balls lifted the side in the final overs.

The innings also brought a personal landmark for Iyer, who crossed 5,000 runs in international cricket. He now has 5,031 runs in 147 matches for India, including six centuries and 37 half-centuries across formats.

His strongest numbers remain in ODIs, where he has scored 3,035 runs in 79 matches at an average of 45.98. In T20Is, he has 1,184 runs from 54 matches, with nine half-centuries and a strike rate above 135.

The second T20I of the five-match series is scheduled to be played in Manchester on July 4. After a rain-hit opener, India will look for clearer conditions and another chance to test whether batting first can remain a deliberate strategy against England.
