FedEx St. Jude Championship: Jordan Spieth Shares Lead With Bogey-Free 65; Boosts Playoff Hopes

New Delhi, August 14: Jordan Spieth delivered a much-needed performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Thursday, firing a bogey-free 5-under 65 to share the opening-round lead and strengthen his hopes of advancing in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Spieth was joined at the top by Michael Thorbjornsen, Jake Knapp, Michael Kim and Kurt Kitayama, who also carded 65s at TPC Southwind in difficult heat.

Currently ranked No. 54 in the FedEx Cup standings, Spieth needs a strong week to break into the top 50 and secure a place in next week’s BMW Championship. The three-time major champion has endured a difficult season following wrist surgery late last year and remains without a top-10 finish in 2026.

However, Spieth said he feels considerably better about his game than he did in recent seasons. “I’m just in a very different place about the game of golf than I was the last couple of seasons heading into this event,” Spieth said. “Again, if it’s going to work out, great. If it doesn’t, I know next year is going to be an awesome year for me. So it takes a lot of the stress off of this week.”

Spieth began his round with eight consecutive pars before finding his rhythm. He made a birdie and then added three more in a five-hole stretch, including a 40-foot putt on the par-3 14th.

The opening round remains tightly packed, with Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, Gary Woodland and Adam Scott among seven players one shot behind the leaders at 4-under 66. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opened with a 68, while Rory McIlroy struggled to a 74 after finishing with a bogey, bogey and double bogey.

With the top 50 earning automatic spots in next season’s $20 million signature events, Spieth knows the stakes are high. But after his opening-round display, he has given himself a strong platform to push for a place in the BMW Championship.
