The second day of the FIFA World Cup 2026 belonged to the co-hosts as both the United States and Canada delivered memorable performances in front of home crowds.

While the USA produced one of the most dominant displays of the tournament so far with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles, Canada made history in Toronto by securing the nation’s first-ever World Cup point after a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The results leave the hosts well placed in their respective groups as the expanded 48-team tournament gathers momentum across North America.

USA 4-1 Paraguay: Balogun Brace Powers Americans to Dream Start

The United States made a statement in the first World Cup match played on American soil since 1994, cruising past Paraguay 4-1 at a packed SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The Americans seized control almost immediately when Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned Weston McKennie’s dangerous ball into his own net in the seventh minute.

With Paraguay already struggling to contain the hosts, Folarin Balogun took centre stage.

The striker doubled the lead in the 31st minute after converting Christian Pulisic’s cross before producing the moment of the match deep into first-half stoppage time. Balogun shrugged off two defenders before curling a superb finish into the top corner to make it 3-0 at the break.

Paraguay managed to pull one back through Mauricio midway through the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in stoppage time when substitute Gio Reyna added a fourth.

The victory highlighted the evolution of the American attack since the 2022 World Cup, with Balogun becoming the first United States player since 1930 to score a brace in a World Cup match.

The only concern for head coach Mauricio Pochettino was the fitness of captain Christian Pulisic, who was substituted at halftime after taking a knock in the opening period.

Earlier in Toronto, Canada etched its name into World Cup history despite being forced to come from behind against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Canadians entered the match carrying the burden of six defeats from six World Cup games across their previous appearances in 1986 and 2022. By the end of Friday, they had finally secured their first-ever point on football’s biggest stage.

Bosnia struck first in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic rose highest from a corner to head home and silence the majority Canadian crowd at BMO Field.

Canada controlled large spells of possession but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Jonathan David and Ismael Kone both squandered promising chances as the hosts searched for a breakthrough.

The pressure continued after the interval, and veteran defender Sead Kolasinac produced a crucial goal-line intervention to deny David what appeared to be a certain equaliser.

Canada’s persistence finally paid off in the 78th minute when substitute Cyle Larin found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations among the 43,000 spectators.

The hosts pushed for a winner in the closing stages but had to settle for a draw, though the result still represented a landmark moment in Canadian football history.
