The Indian Premier League (IPL) trade window for the 2027 season has already delivered a massive blockbuster: Rishabh Pant’s emotional return to the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a direct trade that sends star left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
While fans are celebrating Pant’s homecoming, former Indian Test opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has offered a highly intriguing and candid assessment of the move, shedding light on the immense pressure that comes with record-breaking auction price tags.

Rishabh Pant made IPL history during the 2025 mega auction when LSG roped him in for a staggering INR 27 crore, making him the most expensive player in the tournament’s history. However, his highly anticipated stint with Lucknow did not go as planned. Under his leadership, LSG struggled, culminating in a dismal IPL 2026 season where they finished at the absolute bottom of the points table (wooden-spooners), prompting Pant to resign from the captaincy.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sadagoppan Ramesh did not mince his words when discussing Pant’s initial departure from Delhi and his subsequent struggles at LSG.
“DC never wanted to let go of Pant and never released him even in 2024. They were ready to negotiate with him and urged him not to leave. But Pant was adamant on entering the auction to go for a higher price despite DC offering him 20 to 25 crores. So he prioritised money but did not get the happiness he wanted with LSG. Otherwise, he would not have left LSG for DC.”
Ramesh emphasized that the sheer weight of being a 27-crore player negatively impacted Pant’s natural game.
“When the price is high, the pressure to perform becomes exponentially higher, and that leads to a drop in performance. That’s the lesson to be learnt from the Rishabh Pant situation.”
A Masterstroke by Delhi Capitals?
According to Ramesh, Delhi Capitals played the long game perfectly. By securing their former talisman in the trade window, they have managed to bring him back for significantly less than what he cost LSG.
“DC went till 21 crores for Pant in the 2024 auction. Yet they’ve got him again now for 15 crores. So it’s turned out to be a clever move from DC. Pant also reached a situation where he desperately wanted to return to DC,” Ramesh noted.
Even though Kuldeep Yadav had an underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign (taking only 10 wickets in 12 matches with a high economy rate of 10.30), Ramesh backed the wrist-spinner’s consistency over Pant’s current form.
“LSG is at the advantageous situation with this trade,” Ramesh explained.
“Kuldeep has the potential to bowl 336 deliveries in a season, so his chances of taking 20 wickets in a season are extremely high. Barring one bad season this year, Kuldeep generally takes close to 15 wickets every season. For Rishabh Pant to match that, he has to score 450 to 500 runs. LSG is at a definite advantage because Kuldeep’s chances of picking up 15 to 20 wickets are much higher than Pant scoring 450+ runs.”
This high-profile trade sets a fascinating narrative for the upcoming IPL 2027 season. Rishabh Pant will be desperate to rediscover his fearless, free-flowing batting now that he is back in his comfort zone at Delhi Capitals without the crushing weight of a record-breaking price tag. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav will look to bounce back from a tough year and become the premier strike bowler LSG desperately needs.
