Germany retain Hockey World Cup with 1-0 win over Spain, equal Pakistan’s Record with Fourth Title

Germany successfully defended their men’s Hockey World Cup title after defeating Spain 1-0 in a tense final in Wavre, Belgium, securing their fourth world crown.

The final was closely contested, with both teams producing disciplined defensive performances and creating limited clear-cut opportunities. Germany eventually found the breakthrough in the third quarter when Michel Struthoff scored in the 44th minute, giving his side a crucial 1-0 lead.

Spain pushed hard for an equaliser during the final stages, but Germany’s defence stood firm. Goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg played a key role in protecting the advantage as the Germans successfully saw out the remainder of the contest.

The victory means Germany have now won the Hockey World Cup four times, following their previous triumphs in 2002, 2006 and 2023. They have also become the first men’s team to win successive World Cups on two separate occasions, having previously achieved back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2006.

Germany’s latest success also carries historical significance on the all-time World Cup honours list. Their fourth title takes them level with Pakistan, who had previously held the record for the most men’s Hockey World Cup championships with four victories.

For Spain, the final ended in disappointment despite an impressive campaign that took them all the way to the title match. Germany, meanwhile, once again demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure on the biggest stage.

The 1-0 victory underlined the importance of defensive organisation and composure in a final where opportunities were at a premium. Struthoff’s third-quarter strike ultimately proved decisive, while Germany’s disciplined defensive effort ensured that Spain could not find a way back.

With another World Cup trophy secured, Germany have further strengthened their position among the most successful nations in international men’s hockey. Earlier on the day, Argentina secured a 2-1 win over co-hosts Netherlands to claim the Bronze medal position in the competition.
