Amstelveen, Aug 19: India produced a commanding performance to defeat arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in their third Group D clash in FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 clash at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Wednesday (August 19), securing their place in the next round of the tournament.

The Men in Orange, returned to winning ways following a shock defeat against England in their previous encounter. This victory, however, at the iconic venue where India defeated Pakistan in the 1973 semi-final ensured they former will enter the next round. The two teams last met in the world cup, back in 2010 where India hammered Pakistan 4-1.

Coach Craig Fulton’s boys dominated the opening quarter, taking a 2-0 lead, and continued to control the contest despite a spirited fightback from Pakistan. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Abhishek also found the net twice. Hardik Singh added the fifth through a penalty stroke.

Pakistan’s goals came through Hannan Shahid, who scored twice, and Sufyan Khan.

India Take Control Early

India made the perfect start, earning a penalty corner inside the opening five minutes. Harmanpreet Singh converted from the penalty corner in the fifth minute to give India a 1-0 lead.

India continued to press and doubled their advantage, with Abhishek finding the target to make it 2-0 in the eleventh minute.

Pakistan struggled to contain India’s attacking pressure in the opening quarter, with India taking their two-goal advantage into the second period.

Harmanpreet Extends India’s Lead

India continued their strong start to the second quarter and were awarded another penalty corner. In the 21st minute, Harmanpreet Singh converted another penalty corner, scoring his second goal of the match to put India 3-0 ahead.

Pakistan finally found a response, soon after the third goal, when Hannan Shahid scored to reduce the deficit to 3-1 in the 22nd minute. India immediately restored their three-goal cushion. Abhishek scored his second goal of the match by scoring in the second quarter (23:12 minutes) to make it 4-1.

Pakistan, however, struck again less than a minute later. Sufyan Khan scored in the 24th minute, reducing India’s advantage to 4-2. India therefore went into half-time with a 4-2 lead.

Hardik Singh Scores From Penalty Stroke

India continued to maintain their advantage after the interval and extended their lead in the 35th minute. Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke to make it 5-2 and put India firmly in control. The third quarter ended with India holding a three-goal advantage.

Hannan Shahid Gives Pakistan Hope

Pakistan refused to give up and pulled another goal back in the fourth quarter. Hannan Shahid scored his second goal of the match in the 46th minute, reducing the deficit to 5-3.

The goal gave Pakistan renewed hope, but India managed to protect their two-goal advantage through the remainder of the contest. The final score read Pakistan 3-5 India.

Cards For Both Teams

The match also saw several cards. For India, Sukhjeet Singh received a green card in the 30th minute, while Rajinder Singh was shown a green card in the 39th minute. Lalage Aditya Arjun received a yellow card in the 55th minute.

Pakistan’s Zikriya Hayat received a green card in the 37th minute, while Muhammad Hammamuddin was shown a green card in the ninth minute.
