For Fernando Muslera, this World Cup 2026 may haunt him forever. An Uruguay legend, perhaps playing the final few matches of his international career, has seen things go horribly wrong as the South American giants have been eliminated from the group stages of the competition.
After a defeat at the hands of Spain, Los Charruas’ hopes for the knockouts have ended, quite shockingly and in a bizarre fashion.

There are a few goalkeepers in this World Cup who have already entered the fifth decade of their lives. But as the likes of Vozinha, Guillermo Ochoa are being celebrated, Muslera remains a solitary figure with disappointment
The team’s exit was sealed by a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final group match, where veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera’s costly error directly led to the decisive goal.
Uruguay Eliminated after Winless Run
Spain topped the group and advanced to the knockout stage. Surprise package Cape Verde secured second place and also progressed, while Uruguay finished third and Saudi Arabia came last. Uruguay failed to accumulate enough points to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Uruguay’s results in the group were as follows:
- 1-1 draw vs Saudi Arabia
- 2-2 draw vs Cape Verde
- 0-1 loss vs Spain
Fernando Muslera at Heart of Uruguay’s Downfall
At 40 years old, Muslera became the first Uruguayan player to feature in five FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026). He had been Uruguay’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper throughout his international career, earning over 130 caps and playing every minute in previous World Cup appearances.
However, his final tournament ended in frustration. In the match against Spain, Muslera failed to deal with a shot from Alex Baena in the 42nd minute. The ball slipped through his hands and into the net, giving Spain the lead in what should have been a routine save. Coach Marcelo Bielsa responded by substituting Muslera at half-time, bringing on Sergio Rochet.
“Fernando Muslera asked me to be subbed off at half time,” the Uruguay coach said after the match.
But it’s not just against Spain. Muslera has been at the heart of Uruguay’s downfall across this World Cup. Three goals were conceded by Uruguay which came directly from Muslera’s mistakes, which is 75 per cent of the total goals they conceded in this World Cup. This is the first instance in a World Cup edition where a goalkeeper has made three mistakes which have led to goals.
Against Cabo Verde, the veteran’s rush of blood cost them in the second half, and they conceded another poor long-distance goal in the first half as well. Especially the second goal was shocking, where Muslera came out of his line and put himself in no man’s land, and Cabo Verde’s Helio Varela knicked the ball and finished in an empty net.
The Estudiantes player is also the only goalkeeper in World Cup history to concede 5 goals from direct mistakes. And it speaks volumes about Uruguay’s misery.
