India Finds A New High Jump Star As Basant Reaches World U20 Final

The second day of the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 brought India’s first positive moment through Basant, who secured his place in the men’s high jump final with a calm and confident display in the qualification round.

The young Indian cleared 2.14m to finish fifth in his qualification group and 11th overall. While the automatic qualifying mark of 2.21m remained untouched by every athlete in both groups, Basant’s 2.14m proved enough to book his place among the 12 finalists.

What stood out even more was the way he approached the competition. Basant cleared 2.00m, 2.05m and 2.10m on his first attempts before overcoming 2.14m on his second. It was the performance of an athlete who remained composed under pressure and understood exactly what the competition demanded.

His qualification is no surprise for those who have followed Indian athletics this season.

Basant has been one of India’s most consistent performers in 2026. He opened the year by winning the Indian Open Jumps in Bengaluru with a clearance of 2.14m, signalling that bigger achievements were on the horizon.

Those expectations became reality at the Junior Federation Cup in Tumkur. There, Basant produced the performance of his career, clearing 2.21m to improve his personal best by an incredible 10 centimetres in just one year. Such progress is rare in high jump, where even small improvements often take years to achieve.

Soon after, he made an unforgettable international debut. Competing at the Asian U20 Championships, Basant claimed the gold medal with a superb jump of 2.20m, announcing himself as one of Asia’s most exciting young high jumpers.

He returned to India and continued his winning form by taking the title at the Indian Athletics Series in Thiruvananthapuram with another strong clearance of 2.16m.

Now, only his second international competition has taken him to a World U20 final.

The challenge ahead will be far greater. Algeria’s Younes Ayachi enters the final as the world U20 leader after clearing 2.28m earlier this season, while Great Britain’s Samuel James has enjoyed a breakthrough year, raising his personal best to 2.25m. Both are among the favourites for the podium.

Yet Basant has already shown throughout this season that he belongs among the world’s best young high jumpers. Every competition has brought greater confidence, better performances and new milestones.

His rise also reflects the growing strength of Indian men’s high jump. Earlier this year, Sarvesh Kushare set a new national record of 2.31m before winning a Commonwealth Games silver medal. Now, another young athlete has emerged to keep that momentum alive.

Whether Basant wins a medal or not, reaching the World U20 final is already an important achievement. It confirms that India has another high jumper capable of competing with the world’s finest.

The final now offers Basant the biggest stage of his young career. If his performances this season are any indication, counting him out would be a mistake.

India’s newest high jump hope has already exceeded expectations. The next leap could be even bigger.
