Mohammedan Sporting Club has announced a major leadership change, appointing Ghazal Uz Zafar as its new President following an Executive Committee meeting held on August 6 at the club tent in Kolkata.

The Executive Committee also decided to remove Humayun Kabir from the presidency with immediate effect. Club sources further indicated that Kabir has been relieved of all positions and responsibilities within Mohammedan Sporting as part of the administrative overhaul.

The decision comes against the backdrop of the club’s ongoing financial difficulties. During the meeting, the Executive Committee reviewed Mohammedan Sporting’s financial position and discussed urgent measures to ensure administrative continuity and financial stability.

The committee acknowledged the club’s outstanding liabilities towards players, coaching staff, employees, statutory authorities, vendors and other creditors. It also placed on record its appreciation for the financial assistance extended by Ghazal Uz Zafar during the current crisis, stating that his support has helped the club continue its day-to-day operations and meet several immediate financial commitments.

Uz Zafar will now lead Mohammedan Sporting through what the club described as a crucial phase, with the focus on strengthening its financial foundation, ensuring administrative continuity and working towards the club’s long-term stability and development.

Kabir, an MLA from the Kandi constituency representing the Janata Unnayan Party, had earlier been elected as club president after reportedly assuring members that he would arrange financial support in the region of ₹20-25 crore for Mohammedan Sporting.

However, the relationship between Kabir and the club deteriorated amid the ongoing financial crisis. According to sources within the club, three cheques of ₹50 lakh each issued by Kabir were dishonoured, raising serious concerns over the promised financial backing. The developments are understood to have played a significant role in the Executive Committee’s decision to remove him from the presidency and all other positions within the club.
