Nirmal Purja Death: The month of August has started on a heartbreaking note with the new of the unfortunate demise of renowned mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja. For the uninitiated, British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja and his 10-member international team went missing a PoK peak post an avalanche. And while rescue operations were on, the latest news suggest that Nirmal Purja has been declared dead. The news was confirmed by Elite Exped, Purja’s adventure company.

In a post shared on social media, Elite Exped wrote, “Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja, tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive. Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy including his trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. Our deepest thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and loved ones. No words can ease the pain of this imaginable loss and we ask that everyone respects their privacy as they grieve. Nims and to all those who lost their lives. You will never be forgotten; your spirit, your purpose and your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come”.
How Did Nirmal Purja Die?
To note, Nirmal Purja and his 10 member team were hit by a devastating avalance at Broad Peak in northern Pakistan, which is the world’s 12th-highest mountain and one of the most difficult mountains to climbe, on July 30, 2026. While the avalanche had cut off the team’s contact with the base camp, it was located at the height of 6600 metres before they lost contact. Soon a rescue operation was launched by the Pakistani Army and the Alpine Club of Pakistan following which the remains of the members of the group were found confirming their unfortunate demise.
Who Is Nirmal Purja?
For the uninitiated, British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja has been one of the most popular high-altitude mountaineers. He had made headlines for climbing world’s 14 highest peaks in just 189 days in 2019 which also inspired the documentary ’14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible’. In fact, he was also among the 10 Nepali climbers who made the first successful winter ascent of K2 which is the world’s second-highest peak. He is survived by his wife Suchi and a kid whom he has always kept away from the spotlight.
