Suryakumar Yadav’s future with Mumbai Indians has become a talking point ahead of the next IPL cycle, with speculation linking the India star with a possible return to Kolkata Knight Riders.
There is a growing likelihood that Suryakumar is looking for an exit from MI and is likely to be offloaded ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

How the KKR Speculation Started
The biggest push to the rumours came in June when Uthappa discussed Suryakumar’s IPL future on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel. He suggested that the batter could eventually return to KKR and potentially take up a leadership role.
Uthappa’s scenario was linked to Gautam Gambhir’s future. Gambhir is currently India’s head coach, but Uthappa speculated that once his stint with the national team ends, he could return to KKR as a mentor or coach. In that situation, Uthappa felt Suryakumar could fit into the franchise as captain.
SKY’s KKR Connection
A return to Kolkata would have a strong element of nostalgia.
Suryakumar represented KKR between 2014 and 2017 and was part of the side that won the IPL title in 2014. He subsequently moved to Mumbai Indians in 2018 and established himself as one of the most destructive middle-order batters in T20 cricket.
MI officially retained Suryakumar for the 2026 season at ₹16.35 crore, making it clear that he remained part of their core group at the start of the campaign. The speculation intensified after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
Suryakumar finished the season with 270 runs from 13 innings at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54. He scored two half-centuries, with 60 being his highest score.
Could KKR Really Make a Move?
On paper, the idea makes sense for KKR. Suryakumar would offer an experienced Indian middle-order batter and a player with previous knowledge of the franchise. The possibility of him taking on a leadership role could also make the move attractive if KKR decide to reshape their leadership group.
But there is currently no reliable confirmation that KKR have formally approached MI for Suryakumar or that a trade is being negotiated. The upside for Knight Riders is that they can offer him the captaincy after Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement.
After winning the T20 World Cup, SKY has been omitted from the Indian team as Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as T20 captain. And a move to KKR and captaincy can give the veteran a perfect launchpad to revive his India career as well.
