Shubman Gill, on the other hand, led his troops in the historic 600th Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. Interestingly, only England and Australia have played more Tests than India.

The Sri Lanka Test will be a crucial test for the men in blue. The Shubman Gill era in Test cricket got off to a promising start with a 2-2 series draw in England, but the subsequent 0-2 home defeat to South Africa has complicated India’s World Test Championship qualification hopes. With plenty still at stake, securing a series victory in Sri Lanka has become particularly important for Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India’s schedule only gets tougher from here, with a two-Test tour of New Zealand followed by a demanding five-Test series against Australia at home. Gambhir, meanwhile, will be eager to turn the page after a difficult run in Test cricket, which has included series defeats to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, with two of those setbacks coming on home soil. “Obviously, the main goal is to play the World Test Championship final, which is next year. We have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around 6 or 7 to be able to have a good chance at qualifying. So in terms of that, I think that this is a very important series for us and we have had the right kind of preparation leading up to the series,” Shubman Gill said ahead of the Sri Lanka Test.

The contest between the left-arm spinners could prove decisive in the Test series, with both teams possessing quality options capable of exploiting the conditions. Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya has developed into a formidable threat, with his height allowing him to extract additional bounce while his sharp turn and variations make him difficult to dominate. How effectively India’s batters handle him could have a major bearing on the series.

India, meanwhile, have plenty of spin firepower of their own. Ravindra Jadeja returns to the Test setup and could be particularly effective with his accurate, stump-to-stump bowling on Sri Lankan pitches. Alongside him, Manav Suthar has emerged as an exciting option, with his ability to generate substantial revolutions making him one to watch. Kuldeep Yadav adds another dimension with his wrist-spin, and when he finds his rhythm, he can be extremely difficult for batters to read.
