Toto Wolff Steps in as Kimi Antonelli and George Russell Resolve Mercedes Flashpoint at Canadian GP

Mercedes teammates Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have resolved their differences following a tense battle for victory during Saturday’s Sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The pair fought wheel-to-wheel for the lead in Montreal before Antonelli twice ran across the grass while attempting to overtake Russell. The incidents sparked an angry radio response from the Italian youngster, who felt he had been forced off the circuit by his teammate.

Antonelli’s first opportunity came on Lap 6 when he attacked Russell around the outside of Turn 1. However, the Briton held his line through the corner exit, leaving the 19-year-old with no room and forcing him onto the grass.

Moments later, Antonelli launched another move at Turn 8 but ran wide again, dropping behind McLaren driver Lando Norris and ending his challenge for the Sprint victory.

The incident prompted interventions from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff during the race, with the Austrian later holding discussions with both drivers before qualifying.

“We had a discussion and we clarified and now it’s all good,” Antonelli told reporters after qualifying.

“We’ve reviewed and we had a chat with Toto and it’s all good now.”

Russell echoed those sentiments and insisted the team’s approach to intra-team racing would remain unchanged despite Saturday’s flashpoint.

“Had a good discussion and we know what we need to do and how we’re going to race each other,” Russell said.

“Nothing’s going to change because we’ve always had that respect for one another. We’re not going to wave anybody by, doesn’t matter if he’s a competitor or a team-mate.

“Of course, we know the number one rule is never to crash with your team-mate.”

Russell admitted he understood Antonelli’s frustration in the immediate aftermath of the incident, saying he would likely have reacted similarly had their positions been reversed.

“If I was in his position and he was in my position, I probably would have reacted the same,” Russell added.

“Because if something doesn’t pay off in the moment and you feel like you’ve been hard done by, you think the other guy is in the wrong. And that’s just natural.

“We’re racers, we’re fighters and we wear our heart on our sleeve.”

Despite the controversy, Mercedes still enjoyed a strong Sprint result in Montreal, with Russell taking victory ahead of Norris, while Antonelli recovered to finish third.

The Silver Arrows locked out the front row once again for Sunday’s Grand Prix, suggesting the team remains firmly focused on its championship challenge after quickly drawing a line under the Sprint race disagreement.
