Sooryavanshi’s first innings in international cricket lasted just 10 balls, but the teenager gave a glimpse of the fearless batting that has made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country.

The left-handed batter struck two sixes during his knock of 14 off 10 deliveries, scoring at a strike rate of 140 before being stumped by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Will Jacks.

Shreyas Iyer Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ahead of Debut

Speaking at the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer praised the teenager’s confidence and said Sooryavanshi had earned his place in the squad through his performances.

“Absolutely. You’ve seen him in the last couple of months, the way he’s been smashing the ball, taking on the best of the bowlers, shows immense confidence that he possesses,” Iyer said when asked whether Sooryavanshi was ready for international cricket.

The India captain also dismissed suggestions that external pressure had influenced the decision to hand the youngster his debut.

“I feel that he completely deserves to be in the squad the way he has performed in the last couple of months and years. He’s someone who doesn’t take pressure at all. The way you see him inside the dressing room, he’s got that unflinching nature. And so good to have him around,” Iyer said.

Iyer added that Sooryavanshi’s approach during India’s training sessions had shown the team management the kind of character the teenager possesses.

A few moments later, Sooryavanshi showed glimpses of that fearless approach by hitting two sixes in his first international innings.

He smashed his second six in the his short innings off Tongue but failed to capitalise upon the brisk start and departed for a 10-ball 14 but shared a 50-run opening stand with Abhishek Sharma before getting stumped by Jos Buttler off Will Jack’s delivery.

Two sixes, 14 runs and a place in the record books marked the beginning of Sooryavanshi’s international career.
