What happened to Ishan Kishan? India star ruled out from New Zealand T20I Match, Reason Revealed

India have suffered a big setback in the T20I series against New Zealand, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out of the contest after sustaining a muscle injury during the series opener.

The development leaves the team management with a selection decision ahead of Saturday’s match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

What happened to Ishan Kishan?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on October 23 that Kishan had suffered a low-grade right adductor strain during the first T20I. The medical team is monitoring his recovery, although the latest update confirms that he will miss the second encounter.

The left-handed batter sustained the injury during India’s successful chase of 226 in the opening match on Thursday. Kishan scored just one run after entering the contest at No. 5, having been moved down the order amid concerns over his fitness. Tilak Varma was promoted to No. 3, a decision that subsequently attracted attention.

India eventually chased down New Zealand’s target with four wickets remaining, registering their highest successful chase in men’s T20I cricket. However, Kishan’s absence could force another adjustment to the batting combination as the visitors look to extend their lead in the five-match series.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Could Replace Kishan

Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as a strong candidate to enter the playing XI. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak indicated that the youngster could feature if Kishan failed to recover, describing him as one of the strongest contenders for the spot.

Sooryavanshi was part of India’s squad but did not feature in the series opener. His potential inclusion would offer the team an aggressive left-handed batting option, although the final decision will depend on the management’s preferred combination.

Kishan has scored 1,955 runs in 67 T20Is, maintaining a strike rate of 148.55. His availability for the remaining matches will depend on his recovery and the medical team’s assessment.
