India vice-captain and opener KL Rahul was forced to retire hurt on 77 off 162 balls during the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday.
The incident occurred at the start of the final session on Day 1 after severe cramps struck the batter. Rahul had built a solid 150-run second-wicket partnership with Devdutt Padikkal following the early run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 32. He reached his 21st Test half-century, featuring nine boundaries and a six, while batting patiently in the humid conditions.

Temperatures hovered around 30°C with high humidity, which took a toll after nearly two full sessions at the crease.Cramps first appeared in his right forearm during the 51st over before tea, requiring on-field treatment from the physio.
What happened to KL Rahul?
After the tea break, Rahul walked out but immediately signalled discomfort. The spasms worsened, affecting his left hand, wrist, and legs. He grimaced in pain, limped heavily, and needed assistance from team physio Kamlesh Jain to leave the field and climb the dressing-room stairs.Captain Shubman Gill replaced him at the crease as India stood at 197/1.
Padikkal continued and went on to score a century. As per the cricket laws, a player who retires hurt can return later in the same innings once recovered. Hence, Rahul is expected to bat later in the innings.
Team management is monitoring his condition closely. As of the latest updates, there is no confirmation of a serious injury beyond the cramps, raising hopes that Rahul could bat again if he recovers sufficiently during the match.
India solid on Day 1
India have already shown their dominance against the Lankans. At the time of publishing, they are 278 for 2 with Padikkal batting on 124 runs, as he scored his maiden Test ton on the day. Shubman Gill departed for 16 runs as Rishabh Pant is at the crease, unbeaten on 24 off 32 deliveries.
