Why the Delay Wasn’t Simple Inertia

VVS Laxman offered the clearest explanation for why this dragged on so long: after Patel’s exit, the board had actually reached an agreement with Andrew Leipus – until he backed out at the last minute over family reasons. A panel including Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and Dr Ashish Soni subsequently shortlisted five candidates from there. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia framed the delay as deliberate rather than negligent: “The vacant position of the head of the sports science is not a deterrent to our activities in CoE. What the Role Actually Demands

The scope here is considerable. The successful candidate becomes BCCI’s Head of Sports Science and Medicine, with direct line management over the Head of Physiotherapy at both the CoE and Team India level, plus the strength and conditioning heads for both. Core responsibilities span injury prevention, rehabilitation, wellness monitoring, long-term physical development, and – notably – building out a dedicated research wing with partnerships across sports and medical institutions. The appointee will also handle departmental budgets, staff development, and can be called on as a spokesperson for performance-related matters.

Who the BCCI Is Actually Looking For

The qualification bar is set high and specific: a master’s degree in Sports Science or a related field (doctorate preferred), a minimum of five years in strategic leadership roles managing multidisciplinary high-performance teams, and current professional accreditation in a relevant discipline. Experience within professional or Olympic sport is required, not just preferred. On top of that, prior work as a Chief Medical Officer or Medical Director, specialist recognition in Sport and Exercise Medicine, and clinical governance expertise are all listed as added advantages – the profile of someone who’s run a serious medical operation before, not simply advised one.

Whoever is selected will report directly to Laxman as Head of Cricket at the CoE – placing the fitness pipeline’s top job under direct oversight from one of Indian cricket’s most respected recent administrators.
