Brendon McCullum, head coach of England’s Test team, has been removed from his position after a string of poor results for the England men’s team in red-ball cricket. Interestingly, the decision comes days after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket following England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 loss to New Zealand in home.
The former New Zealand captain’s exit draws a curtain on the ‘Bazball’ era. In a statement issued by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the board said, “Brendon McCullum will stand down as England Men’s Test Head Coach but continue to lead the England Men’s White Ball teams.”

In response to the decision taken by the ECB, McCullum said, “I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this.”
“It’s been a privilege and an honour, and I’m grateful. Grateful to the players, the staff, and the fans who supported us on the journey,” the New Zealander further said.
Brendon McCullum’s Report Card
Brendon McCullum’s tenure as England’s Test coach was defined by bold ideas, memorable victories, and an aggressive brand of cricket that came to be known as “Bazball.” Appointed in 2022, he transformed England’s approach to the longest format, guiding the side to emphatic home series wins over New Zealand (3-0) and South Africa (2-1), before overseeing a historic 3-0 clean sweep in Pakistan.
However, the attacking philosophy did not translate into sustained success in the World Test Championship. England finished fourth in the 2021-23 cycle, slipped to fifth in 2023-25, and currently sits seventh in the 2025-27 standings.
McCullum’s spell was also marked by several off-field controversies. White-ball captain Harry Brook was involved in an altercation with a bouncer at a Wellington nightclub in 2025, while England’s Ashes squad faced criticism over a mid-series trip to Noosa. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson later missed the second Test against New Zealand after breaching the team’s curfew, before Stokes announced his retirement midway through the series amid reports of a fallout with McCullum and England managing director Rob Key.
Despite stepping down as Test coach, McCullum will continue to oversee England’s white-ball teams.
