India have been dealt a significant setback in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, with off-spin allrounder Shreyanka Patil ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle ligament injury.
Patil sustained the injury during India’s match against the Netherlands on Wednesday in Leeds. Just one delivery into her spell, she twisted her ankle while chasing a ball towards mid-on. The pain was immediate, and she was seen clutching her right leg as the team physio rushed onto the field. Unable to bear any weight, Patil had to be stretchered off, with scans later confirming ligament damage.

In her absence, the selectors have called up legspinner Prema Rawat as a replacement. The 24-year-old earns her maiden call-up to the senior national side. Rawat has previously featured in the Women’s Premier League, representing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana.
Rawat was also part of the India A squad touring England for a six-match white-ball series starting June 20 in Northampton. She impressed in the Rising Stars Women’s Asia Cup, where she picked up eight wickets at an economy rate of 4.27, playing a key role in India A’s title-winning campaign.
For Patil, the latest setback adds to a troubling injury history. A broken finger ruled her out of the 2024 T20 World Cup, followed by shin splints in both legs and a wrist stress reaction that sidelined her for nearly a year. She only recently returned to action, featuring in the Women’s CPL 2025 and contributing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title triumph in WPL 2026.
Despite the blow, India have made a strong start to their World Cup campaign, securing victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands. They will next face South Africa in Manchester on Sunday as they look to maintain their unbeaten run.
